Colombia destroys US in COPA opener, Cristian Zapata and James Rodriguez scored two goals to led the Colombian National Football Team in a 2-0 victory against the United States National Football Team in the inauagural of Copa America Centenario 2016 held at Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara last June 3.
Geoff Cameron defended Carlos Bacca to stop the latter’s attempt at the goal. Juan Cuadrado clipped one forward that led to Bacca running in behind but Cameron stopped to give Colombia a corner kick.
Zapata capitalized on it as he received a perfect pass from Edwin Cardona and he executed it swiftly that shook the adrenaline of the American goalkeeper Brad Guzan to hand Colombia a 1-0 advantage. US head coach Jurgen Klinsmann became irate over the goal.

The Americans have an advantage to score at the goal and they had many chances. However, they didn’t capitalize on it. They showed some vibrancy and coordination from the pitch but there is no cohesiveness on who is going to attempt at the goal.
US have a best chance when Michael Bradley took a shot but it was blocked by the Colombian keeper Neco Martinez. DeAndre Yedlin crossed to the back post but it became wide. However, Fabian Johnson recovered the loose ball but Colombia got men to take it away from him.
Bacca and Cuadrado became non-existent as they struggled to find offense and rhythm for themselves.
A penalty kick was given to Colombia, and Rodriguez capitalized as he sent Guzan to the wrong way to deliver the second goal for the squad, 2-0.
USA, all of a sudden, was in a tough position and Klinsmann once again became furious at the sidelines. Colombia might have a problem defensively but the Americans gave away two goals.
In the second half, USA was on the attack and Cameron sent the ball to Bobby Wood but he missed in an over hit shot.
Clint Dempsey attempted but it was too short for the USA. On the other side, Colombia has attacked three times and they also sent Cuadrado to defend against Johnson in an isolation play.
Dempsey once again fished for a point but reserve goalkeeper David Ospina blocked it with two hands.
Ospina came up with a big saves although Dempsey nailed the ball from 25 yards and he searched for the corner, as the former erased the possible point for US.
Colombia had a chance to increase their advantage. Cuadrado was running at the break, free on the right side but Bacca fired it that went in the goal post that resulted to a corner for Colombia because of Yedlin’s save.
James received the ball and shoots the shot from a pass of Cardona. However, James fell awkwardly and his shoulder banged up.
James was attended some medical attention and sent him out immediately because Colombian’s don’t want to risk him by staying him at the pitch.
Another opportunity came for Colombia but Bacca missed the shot and it went to the crossbar.
Dempsey, on the other hand, fired a shot from 18 yards but it was stripped wide. Bradley answered back with a corner and it seemed to go in, until they lose it as Martinez deflected the attempt.
Colombia became weak defensively in the box but USA once again didn’t capitalize because they didn’t enter in the box more often.
Zusi checked him as the USA hopes to salvage the game but his presence wasn’t good enough as their every corner went short or deflected by the keeper.
USA opened their COPA campaign with a loss.
